Our Masters project (2018) reimagined Taylor Square, Sydney’s vibrant Darlinghurst hub, through a heritage interpretation intervention, celebrating its role as a cultural and social crossroads. Born in the 19th century amid Georgian and Victorian streetscapes, Taylor Square evolved into the heart of Sydney’s LGBTQ+ community, its streets echoing colonial roots and modern inclusivity. Our extensive study mapped its heritage architecture, from the 1844 Darlinghurst Courthouse to Oxford Street’s eclectic facades, using archival research and site surveys. The interpretive strategy introduced Victorian-inspired street furnishings, walls adorned with murals tracing Sydney’s history, and floor slabs engraved with narratives of cultural milestones. Designed for all ages, pedestrian-friendly walkways and tactile paving ensured accessibility, fostering community connection. Aligned with ICOMOS principles and NSW heritage guidelines, our vision transformed Taylor Square into an immersive historical canvas, weaving its storied past into a dynamic, inclusive present for residents and visitors alike.
