Our restoration of a historic Maqbara in Gujarat, a 16th-century Mughal masterpiece, revived its ethereal grandeur, rooted in the era of Emperor Akbar’s reign (circa 1550–1600 CE). This sacred tomb, adorned with soaring domes, delicate sandstone jalis, and vibrant wall drawings, reflects Gujarat’s syncretic Mughal-Sultanate legacy. We meticulously conserved intricate marble inlays and jalis, employing lime mortar and natural pigments to restore faded floral and calligraphic motifs. Scientific analysis guided the revival of wall drawings, with local artisans hand-mixing pigments to match original hues. Our comprehensive conservation plans, developed through detailed condition assessments, prioritized authenticity, safeguarding the Maqbara’s spiritual essence. From 2021–2024, we blended traditional craftsmanship with modern stabilization, transforming this cultural jewel into a timeless testament to Mughal artistry, preserving its legacy for generations to cherish and explore.
