As a child, I was always fascinated by the charm and aura of the well-preserved old monuments. These buildings are the biggest witness of our cultural history. Passing through the well-preserved, ancient monuments gave me a sense of belonging.
Even as a child, looking at the ruins of the monuments annoyed me. Along with the crumbling buildings, their glorified past also disappeared. Losing a part of our history irked me. This is how I decided to become a Conservation Architect.
While growing up, I aimed to preserve and conserve our tangible structures.
As a conservation architect, I aim to preserve and reveal the buildings’ and monuments’ aesthetics and historic value. Throughout my work, I maintain the historic value and the integrity of the buildings.
My in-depth knowledge of architectural periods and styles has helped me bring monuments back to their original state.
It is a must for a conservation architect to possess a thorough knowledge of architectural periods. The next step is to source the right material required for restoration. From bricks to windows, everything should be according to the particular era.
I divide my work into 4 major steps:
It is my first and foremost responsibility to provide expert advice related to the conservation of heritage sites. I work closely with other professionals to achieve diverse objectives.
I aim to promote the conservation of unprotected architectural sites.
Liaising between the property owner and the state is the most crucial part of our job. I make sure to explain restoration work to the officials accurately.
Planning is the most important step of restoration. It involves laying a strong plan to carry on the preservation and conservation plan. The key to success lies in conducting the right kind of communication with the clients to make them understand the process.
I Sravani Naraparaju started my professional journey as an intern at NBRS Architecture, Sydney, Australia.
The two most important projects I worked on were the General Gordon Hotel, Sydney and WareHouse at Sussex Street Sydney.
As an Intern I worked on restoration plans, Documentation, Conservation Management, Site Visits etc.
My next assignment was with Savani Heritage Conservation P Ltd. in India.
I was a part of the Restoration process of the Town Hall and old Municipal Office, in Visakhapatnam. I was in charge of everything from restoration plan to BOQ, defect mapping, status report, documentation, site supervision and on-site management.
I got an opportunity to prepare the conservation management plan of Cellular Jail, Port Blair.
Restoration of Mahabat Maqbara, Junagadh, Gujarat was another interesting project I worked on.
Another milestone was achieved when I joined Jeernodhar Conservators Pvt Ltd., India. Since then, I have done multiple projects including:

Sravani Naraparaju has worked with BACSA on the conservation of the most impressive monument in St Mary's Cemetery on the Island in Chennai, the early nineteenth century tomb of Dr James Anderson. We have been impressed with her careful and methodical approach to seeking and achieving solutions to problems. She has always been concerned to respect the age and aesthetics of the historic structure of the tomb. She has also been an excellent collaborator, giving due consideration to our opinions and reactions to her proposals, and never proceeding without our agreement.
